To turn over the
boat to the normal position took at least 10 minutes and more than
ten people. Incidentally, we managed to do this only after air was
released from one of the boards. Water, running from the engine submerged
under water for about half-hour, gives rise to light sadness. We remove
the cover, quickly unscrew the spark plugs, blow the cylinders (thanks
God all electric equipment is in good repair), drain water from the
fuel system and air filter. During drainage of water from the air
filter (and this process takes a quite a lot of time) our "hot
Finnish guy" to somebody's question: "how much longer to
wait till water is drained completely?" responds "if we
are not in a hurry ... we can wait a little longer". Burst of
laughter slightly relieves the situation and the above mentioned phase
is unanimously accepted as the "quotation of the race".
At last everything is mounted back and we drop the boat on water,
the "hero of the incident" Gerastchenko is again in the
boat, the key is turned ... The engine starts without any "sneezing".
As if it never stayed for half-hour upside down in water. It seems
nobody was expecting this. Shouts of joy from the team members and
the fans. A unanimous sigh of disappointment from the competitors
... We present the boat to the technical commission, and Andrey plunges
into the race. We are drawing another sad conclusion - again we lost
more than one hour, dropped from the second place in the class to
the sixth place, "MERCURY NII TM" is nearly 70 laps ahead
of us, "AUTONAUTIQUE" - more than 30 laps. It is painful
...
Less than in one
hour and half the principal competitor - number 10 "MERCURY NII
TM" goes out of the race - the electronic system of the engine
OPTMAX failed. The team is trying to restore the "electronic
brain", but all in vain - the boat is sent ashore. For them it
was the end of the race.
But for us it
seems everything just starts. By five o'clock a.m. we managed to move
from the sixth place to the fourth place. But at 5.15 - stoppage again,
the interlocking system trips. Again we go to the repair pontoon,
lose twenty minutes for search of the cause. It turned out to be very
simple - water got into the main petrol tank after capsizing, reached
the fuel filter. We drain, change tanks, and plunge again into the
race. By six o'clock in the morning - in the fifth place. Who would
have any doubts...
10 hours of the
race to go. "MERCURY NII TM" will never catch up with us.
"AUTONAUTIQUE" is 46 laps ahead, and this means at least
one hour and a half. They do not yield to us in speed, so we can catch
up with them only if their boat breaks down. But we should not count
on that - anyway they are the professional team with the experience
of successful participation in the " 24 hours of Rouan"
race. The "MNEV & K" No.6 boat is 21 laps ahead of us,
and "DSK SAMARA" No.4 - 6 laps ahead. We can compete with
them, at any rate we are slightly surpassing them in speed with our
six-cylinder 150-h.p. engine YAMAHA HPDI. Now our best hope is that
there will be no incidents or breaks.
By seven o'clock
we move to the fourth position - but only because that "MERCURY
NII TM" is out of the race. By eight o'clock in the morning we
reduce our lag from No.6 down to 13 laps - the MNEV & K team has
problems with the fuel system, their boat is standing nearly till
9 o'clock in the morning. So, at 9.00 we are already in the third
place having reduced the lag from "DSK SAMARA" down to 2
laps. 43 laps ahead of us - "AUTONAUTIQUE". So far - so
good. Approximately at 9.30 we got ahead of No.4 and came to the second
place.
By one o'clock
in the afternoon we are 14 laps ahead of "DSK SAMARA", equipment
runs without a hitch and we continue to improve our position. We are
watching the tight fight between "DSK SAMARA" and MNEV &
K for the third place. At 15.20 we are changing the pilots for the
last time. The honorary right to finish was granted to Mike Kontunen
- he really deserved it. At 16.00 - the finish.
